Found Paper~Endangered Species

The Atlanta Collage Society has an opening of the show, "Found Paper~Endangered Species" on Saturday, June 4th, 2011 at the ART Station in Stone Mountain Georgia. The event is free and there will be music, food and art of course. The show was curated by ACS mentor and artist John Morse, and focuses on the transformation of found paper into high art........paper is playing a smaller and smaller part in our lives as time progresses.....come out and see talented artist's interpretation of this concept.

Lance Carlson will have 7 pieces in the show.

when i went to search for a chair to turn into a work of art for the Atlanta Furniture Bank's Chairish the Future event, i narrowed it down to about 5 selections. finally i decided on a blocky modern chair and loaded it up for the trip back to the studio. when i went to work on it, i noticed that it was stamped "Property of Emory University"........it then dawned on me that this was a chair that i had specified for the George and Irene Woodruff Residential Center......and project that i designed in the 1980's
subliminally selected no doubt.

The Atlanta Collage Society show, "before the first cut" is up and waiting to be seen at the Ferst Center for the Performing Arts on the Georgia Tech campus. If you get a chance to see it you will get a glimpse into the materials and process that each artist utilizes in the creation of their pieces. It would make an interesting book/catalog........if someone wanted to "run with it".
Be sure to check with the Ferst Center for open viewing hours.

year long studio project

my year long one (at least) piece a day in the studio continues. for the month of september, i am cutting squares of vellum 5"X5" and then preparing them with gesso (black or white), collaging pre-melted plastic and then using pens to finish.

a few are posted here and you you can see them all as they are posted on my FB PAGE throughout the month.

What are the current trends in art? What do you see in the magazines or galleries or homes that seems to share a common thread? An artist friend of mine, Vickie Martin, suggested that green art is all the rage. Green is trending throughout all the world right now, as an influence over all phases of our work, home, our lives....but is it just a passing fad or fancy?will it all be forgotten when the energy crisis subsides for a while? Does art really have much to do with our carbon footprint?I am interested in hearing what other artists, and design professionals think about what is trending in art? I belive that the cutting edge that is portrayed for example on ART 21 hasn't really made it down ot the trending level. Trendy is sometimes considered a perjorative term, however i find the trending topics on twitter pretty fascinating.So let me hear from the blogosphere about trending art. I guess this could be categories, styles, subject matter, size, medium, or just about anything.

50th Annual Juried Art Competition -San Diego

The pieces for the 50th Annual Juried Art Competition at San Diego Art Institute's Museum of the Living Artist have been selected. My mixed media piece, screw your courage to the sticking place, was selected to be shown in this exhibition. The show opens on March 20, 2009 and runs through May 10, 2009. If you are in the area. stop in and check it out. The title comes from Shakespeare's play, MACBETH, which is collaged into the piece.

ART: RAW Projects New York City

Start spreading the news...my pieces are shipping this week to New York City. They will be part of an emerging artist show in West Chelsea, NY. This is the inaugural exhibit for art raw gallery, and will open on February 19, 2009 and run through March 21 2009. The gallery is located at 210 Eleventh Ave, 905 [@ W25th St]New York, NY 10001. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11am to 6pm. There are 300 artists displayed in this show. These were selected from over 25,000 submittals.

and this is fun, the Saturday of the opening reception is also a huge day for Dahlonega's Old Fashioned Christmas celebration. Here is a YouTube link that give you a feel for what's going on that day in addition to the gallery's opening reception...

The Christmas parade happens that day @ 5 pm, there is a handbell choir, Father and Mrs. Christmas for the kids... it's going to be a ton of fun.
